WHEN IN OUR MUSIC GOD IS GLORIFIED
"After Singing the Passover Hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives." (Matthew 26:30)
We have only this verse from Matthew and a similar one from Mark as evidence that Christ sang. It would be interesting to know what kind of a voice Christ had. If he were to visit St. Francis today, would he be singing from the altar, or maybe in the choir loft? Maybe he would join the Sunday School children as they sing their songs. Or perhaps he would sing in a monotone voice from the back pew.
Actually, Christ's voice can be heard every Sunday here at St. Francis. He sings from the altar. He sings in the choir. He joins with the Sunday School when they sing. He even sits in the back pew and sings in a monotone voice. His voice is your voice. Others can hear him when you sing.
As you participate in the service each Sunday morning, sing with a little extra gusto, even if you encounter a hymn you have never sung before, or you have forgotten how the pointing in the psalm is supposed to work. It does not matter whether your voice is that of a fine lyric soprano, a basso profundo, or a tono defunctis; what matters is that you sing to (and for) the Lord.
"Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise; And may God give us faith to sing always:
"Alleluia!"
