Visual Arts Ministry

The Arts Ministry at St. Francis is another way we acknowledge the grace and beauty in God’s world. Through the work of artists and photographers from the Pacific Northwest, we enhance our worship with displays in the narthex of the church. A committee made up of St. Francis members selects appropriate art and manages the displays.  Paintings, photographs and other media are typically on display for a month to six weeks. Often, the work of St. Francis parishioners is displayed. We have also displayed the works of nationally prominent artists.

On Display - Fusion by Karla Piatt

The beautiful artwork on display in the narthex is by Portland area artist Karla Piatt.  Karla cuts flat glass then fuses the pieces in a kiln.  The result is an imaginative work that flows naturally such as salmon in a river, a galloping horse or birds in the air.

Karla grew up in California and was educated at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo.  She earned a master’s degree from Portland State University.  She is a computer science professor at Portland State.  She and her husband Robert reside in the Portland area.
