Visual Arts Ministry

The Arts Ministry at St. Francis is another way we acknowledge the grace and beauty in God’s world. Through the work of artists and photographers from the Pacific Northwest, we enhance our worship with displays in the narthex of the church. A committee made up of St. Francis members selects appropriate art and manages the displays.  Paintings, photographs and other media are typically on display for a month to six weeks. Often, the work of St. Francis parishioners is displayed. We have also displayed the works of nationally prominent artists.

On Display - Cherilyn SunRidge

The stunning artwork on display in our narthex is by Oregon City artist Cherilyn SunRidge. Her works are deeply influenced by growing up in Southeast Colorado, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Particularly in the beautiful “Deer Tracks Beckon,” Cherilyn’s Commanche ancestry is apparent.

Cherilyn studied art at Stephens College in Missouri and at the University of California.  Water colors became her favorite art form despite having studied interior design and portraiture. The works on display are acrylic on canvas.

Cherilyn says, “I love to walk Earth, feel deep into the sustenance which is our daily provider.”

Her “walks” have taken her to California, Colorado, Alaska and now Oregon. She was honored in 2012 with the INDIE Excellence Book Award among many other honors.
